Canadian Army Trucks to be made in USA

It’s a good thing that the CAW is standing up for Ontario manufacturing jobs because the federal government sure isn’t!

The following article appeared in The Toronto Star on January 14, 2009:

“The Canadian Auto Workers is criticizing the federal government for awarding a $254 million contract to a U.S. company to build trucks for the Canadian Forces at its plant in Texas, while it is laying off workers at its plant in Chatham.”

I don’t believe for a minute that Canadian workers in Chatham’s Navistar plant can’t build 1300 trucks for the Canadian Forces.  Why should the contract go to American workers?  Why should our government spend Canadian taxpayers’ money to provide jobs for American workers?

Peter McKay, Jim Flaherty and the rest of the Conservatives in Ottawa are showing an amazing lack of concern for working Canadians.  Thank goodness we have strong union leaders who will speak out for our interests.

If this is a preview of how Stephen Harper’s government plans to deal with the recession in the upcoming budget, I don’t see how the opposition parties can support him.
