Guergis Should Apologize

Helena Guergis’ latest constituency newsletter urges us to write to our troops in Afghanistan and show them our support.  Perhaps she should have been thinking more carefully about their safety before she revealed details about Stephane Dion’s trip to Afghanistan before it actually began.  In doing so, she jeopardized not only the safety of Monsieur Dion and his party, but also that of Canadian soldiers assigned to protect them from a possible attack by Taliban insurgents who had thus been forewarned about his visit.

Surely, as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Guergis should know that what she did violated her oath of confidentiality.  It is no wonder that Monsieur Dion has called for her resignation from the cabinet.  She should do the honourable thing and at least apologize to him and to her constituents and admit that this was a mistake which will not be repeated.

Otherwise, how can we in Simcoe Grey trust that she will make wiser decisions in the future?  How can Canadians in general believe that she can be trusted with other important issues in her role as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs?

President, Simcoe Grey NDP Riding Association
