A Better Way to Support the Troops

MP Helena Guergis has been sending out lots of constituency mail lately, probably because a federal election may be pending. Her latest mailing, which focuses on the Canadian army, is rather insulting in its simplicity: “They protect us. We will support them. Do you support the Harper government … giving them the tools they need?” Put that way, who would argue against supporting our troops?

But let’s look beyond the cheap rhetoric of Ms. Guergis’ words.

First of all, from whom does Canada need protection? The war in Afghanistan is an American war and it’s all about oil.

Secondly, Ms. Guergis says that the Harper government is making sure that our true north stays strong and free. We can be neither strong nor free if we continue to give away our economic sovereignty and control over our energy and water resources to American multinationals through the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Security and Prosperity Partnership.

Thirdly, Ms. Guergis implies that with our strong military presence in Afghanistan, Canada is “again a leader on the world stage”. Why do we have to be involved in a war to be a leader on the world stage? Didn’t we have a much better international reputation when our troops were effective as peacekeepers?

Finally, our MP says that the Harper government is “ensuring that Canada’s voice is heard” around the world. Unfortunately, the voice that the world is hearing is Mr. Harper echoing the voice of the Bush administration. Personally, I don’t think most Canadians want that.

Of course we all support our Canadian troops. We want to bring them back alive, the sooner the better. It’s the war that many of us don’t support.

One Response to “A Better Way to Support the Troops”

  1. Your right Helena’s Message was “rather insulting in its simplicity” but this is to be expected considering that Helena or should I say Ms Huronia the realestate specialist, is about as qualified to talk politics as Britney Spears. The Conservative Government loves the fact that the simple tend confuse support for the troops for support for the war, so it is very likely that Helena believes that all those that don’t support the war don’t support the troops. The yellow ribbon campaign has been confused with war support as too many people can’t tell the difference. If I never see another bloody yellow ribbon in my life I will be happy. The Conservatives would like us to support the war but when we talk about taxes (the real source of income for the military) They balk and cringe. So who is really not supporting the troops. The weak minded may fall for this conservative crap but as for the rest of us we will stick to paying our taxes to support the troops and protesting this war for oil.
